Big Ask. Big Give.
So how exactly do you ask people for a kidney? You have to just ask. Be honest. Educate. Don't make up answers. Be prepared for people to: change the topic, ask a lot of questions and possible just stare at you.
Sometimes people just don't know what to say. And that's okay. My advice. TAKE THE RISK.
I have to admit it was hard at first to make myself vulnerable. The truth is you never know what someone is willing to do. Thankfully I have a dozen or so people that have volunteered to be potential donors. That's a dozen chances of LIFE. I feel truly blessed. The average wait time to get a kidney transplant from the deceased donor kidney list is approximately three to five years. Transplanted kidneys from a deceased donor generally don't last as long as those from a living donor (usually 10 years for a deceased donor kidney; 15-20 years for a living donor kidney).
