Drugs Part I

2011 was a roller coaster of emotions. Shortly after my re-diagnosis I started on new meds to try and control my blood pressure and protein loss. First up Lisinopril, three weeks later I had developed a stupid, dry cough. I went to my Nephrologist and he said that it was a possible side effect so we would switch to something else. Next up, Ramipril.

Lisinopril and Ramipril are two different types of ACE Inhibitors so it was only a matter of time before the cough returned. A super, dry and persistent cough. Felt like I was constantly trying to clear my throat.

So then we tried Losartan, sold under the trade name Cozaar among others, is an angiotensin II receptor angtagonist drug used mainly to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). One week after I started taking Losartan, I suffered an episode that mimicked a stroke. I was on my way to work and in typical NYC fashion rushed downstairs and through the turn-style. Then it hit me. I felt disoriented and light headed. I sat on a bench and tried to eat some of my lunch. I grabbed the person next to me and asked to get me help. I barely got the words out. SCAREEEEEEEEY AS HELLLLLLL. After a very dramatic rescue from the EMT and quick  visit to ER, I was all better.
